Why the meet?
The divergence of business from established ethical practices has engaged attention of thinkers at all times. Law is an embodiment of contemporary ethics; ethics themselves may be seen as eternal human values. Law is often subject to interpretation, and therefore, sophistry of arguments may be applied to find escape routes from law; ethics are more subjective, and are closer to human conscience, and therefore, a practice may fit into the literal interpretation of law; however, it may tread on ethical values.
Corporate professionals [chartered accountants, company secretaries, cost accountants
] are the friend, philosopher and guide for a business entity. Most strategic business decisions are made by or based on the advice of corporate professionals. When the legality of business decisions is questions, corporate professionals play key role in advising business.
Corporate professionals face the delicate dilemma of meeting the current needs of business entities, and yet adhering to established ethical values. The duel is the same that is often faced while balancing short-term convenience and long-term goals. Facing these challenges, corporate professionals are often blamed for siding with short-term objectives, while disregarding ethical values, and of course, the spirit of the law.
This meet is being organized with the specific objective of re-examining the role of ethics in business, and more specifically, corporate professions. We intend to end up with practiceable conclusions for more ethical conduct in professional life.
